Dit proefschrift onderzoekt de ontwikkeling van de beroepskwaliteiten van aanstaande leraren in een pluriforme samenleving, zowel op conceptueel-theoretisch als op empirisch niveau. Uitgangspunt is dat het leraarschap een relationele verhouding tot de leerling veronderstelt. Daarin schuilt de normatief-reflexieve kern van het leraarschap. Vanuit deze oriëntatie op het leraarschap wordt in het proefschrift ook de theorie-praktijkverhouding in de opleiding uitvoerig aan de orde gesteld en wordt gezocht naar de vormen van een opleidingsdidactische concept die bij dat normatief-reflexieve beeld van leraarschap past.
